The fourth annual Solo International Performing Arts (SIPA) festival, held
in the Central Java city of Surakarta, seems to have proven successful both in
terms of increasing attendance and offering a greater variety of themes from
previous years.
“We deliberately make different themes each year for SIPA,” the chairwoman of the festival’s organizing committee, Irawati Kusumorasri, said.
Irawati, who has been heading the festival’s preparation since 2009, said that the basic concept of SIPA was to unite diverse arts on a single stage.
It reflects the unity of the performing arts and the community, she said. “It always tries to make cultural energy the vitality of life.”
SIPA, according to Irawati, was in line with the programs of Mayor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in his bid to make Surakarta, or Solo as the city is more popularly known, a MICE (meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition) city.
“Since the beginning Pak Jokowi has been very supportive. He recommends SIPA to everywhere. It really helps us,” Irawati said.
Jokowi, according to Irawati, also played a significant role in redesigning SIPA as an annual event, from its previous biennially basis, in order to further boost its image.
Yet, this year, Jokowi was unable to officially open the festival as he was preparing for his inauguration as the governor of Jakarta after being officially declared the winner of the election, following the Sept. 20 runoff against incumbent Governor Fauzi Bowo.
The opening ceremony on Friday was overseen by Deputy Surakarta Mayor FX Hadi Rudyatmo with the ambassadors from South Korea, the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam in attendance.
Heliosphere, performed by the British Councils’ The Dream Engine opened the festival, themed “Go Green: Save Our World”, on Friday evening.
Their performance at the festival was monumental because it was the first time that Heliosphere, featuring acrobatic dancer suspended from helium ballons, was ever performed in Indonesia.
“This is a fantastic opportunity. We ever read it on the website, and this is our performance here in Indonesia,” director of The Dream Engine, Steve Edgar, said.
The audience was especially amazed by the courageous performance of Heliosphere’s lead dancer, Robin Simpson.
“I thought she was a man. She was completely brave,” 23-year-old audience member Muhammad Ikhsan said.
The group was also scheduled to perform on Saturday together with Hohgakubu Tohoku from Japan, Duta Seni Krakatau Steel from Banten, Gui Zhi Theater from Taiwan, Lutgardo Luza Labad from the Philippines and Independent Expression from Surakarta.
Singer-turned-environmentalist Ully Sigar Rusady, along with her sister Paramitha Rusady, her daughter Elsa Sigar and her granddaughter, Cinta, also put together an interesting performance.
After her performance, Ully distributed 10,000 sengon tree seedlings to members of the audience.
“I never stop asking people re-green our own environment. Let’s go green our city,” Ully shouted.
On Sunday, the third day and penultimate day of the festival, activities got underway with a performance by Carel Kraayenhof from the Netherlands, followed by performances from Mugi Dance of Surakarta, Buntus Capoeira of Brazil, Teater Tetas of Jakarta and Suvarnabhumi of Yogyakarta.
